I walk
through Africa,
the world’s mother
and sister. I slave, laugh,
give birth, I hiss, I pray, I click, I spit,
I sing, I smack, I nurse. I breathe
the cooking fire back to life
after another cold night and then
the sun can come up again.
Just like God breathes over us. I am
the stone that carries the cooking pot,
the fire hardened love, the secret
of Africa’s red soil and Africa is my secret
because I carry her under my heart,
she grows there, new and strong.
I feel her kicking already.
